(New Orleans-Excerpts taken from www.gcaconf.com) The Lady Bleu Devils overcame a 13-point second quarter deficit to knock off a feisty Southern University at New Orleans team and advance to the tournament semifinals for the first time under Head Coach Norbert Rome.
"We're encouraged," said Rome.
Dillard had four players in double figures, led by Alyssa Washington (SO/Austin, Texas)'s 17 points, and 11 rebounds. Shaelynn Moore (SO/Houston, Texas) added 14, with Adriiana Jackson (SO/Houston, Texas) (13) and Alexia McDonald (JR/Petal, Miss.) (11) combining for 24.
Micah Brooks led the Lady Knights with 15 points in the loss.
The two teams were nearly identical in the first half, with each making 14 shots from the floor, but SUNO went cold in the second quarter and Dillard clawed its way back to take a 34-33 halftime lead.
In the third quarter, the Lady Bleu Devils took advantage of SUNO miscues and outscored the Lady Knights 22-10 to lead by 13 heading into the fourth. SUNO would narrow the gap slightly, but was unable to mount a serious challenge.
While Dillard outshot SUNO 47 percent to 36 percent, the Lady Bleu Devils converted only 2-of-9 three-pointers. Both teams handled the ball poorly, turning it over 23 times each. The Lady Bleu Devils outscored the Lady Knights 12-4 at the free throw line and outrebounded SUNO 41-38.
The road does not get any easier for Dillard. First they had to travel to SUNO to beat the Lady Knights on its home floor, and now will have to travel to Xavier to face the Gold Nuggets at 5 pm Xavier's Convocation Center. The two teams split their season series, each winning on their home floor. If they do the daunting task of getting past both local rivals and defeat each one on its home floor, then the team will proudly make it to its biggest game in recent years and can crown themselves, "Queens of NOLA."
The tournament championship final is scheduled for Sunday, March 5, at 2:00 p.m. at the Xavier Convocation Center. Dillard University could potentially have both men's and women's basketball teams in tomorrow's championship games if both teams win on Semifinal Saturday.
