(Kansas City, Mo. Excerpts taken from www.naia.org) The National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) has announced the contestants for the 2017 NABC-NAIA Shoot & Slam, presented by US Bank. The final four 3-point shooters are selected, including Dillard University's Jalen McGaughy (JR/Ann Arbor, Mich.), who currently leads the entire NAIA (D1) in 3-point field goal percentage at 52 percent. Furthermore, three-of-four dunkers are announced. The fourth and final dunker will be selected using a fan vote on Instagram. The 3-point and dunk festivities take place March 18 at 4 p.m. CDT and are in conjunction with the 80th Annual Buffalo Funds-NAIA Division 1 Men's Basketball National Championship at Municipal Auditorium.
This is the first time that a Dillard University men's basketball player will participate in this national event. His team is currently ranked number seven in the country.
"I am honored that Dillard University and Coach Newell gave me a chance to keep playing ball, so I look forward to shining and putting the Bleu Devils on the map in the NAIA 3-point contest," said McGaughy, who is ranked number two in the NAIA (D1) in both total blocks (70) as well as blocks per game (2.8).
The order of contestants will be alphabetical by school name. All four players will participate in the first round with the goal of making as many 3-point shots as possible in 60 seconds. Similar to the NBA 3-point contest, five racks with five balls each will be stationed around the arc. The two players with the highest score from the first round advance to the final round. The contestant with the highest final round score will be the winner.
McGaughy has had an outstanding campaign in conference play for the Bleu Devils, who have only lost one conference game all season. Look for McGaughy to be named Gulf Coast Athletic Conference Men's Basketball Newcomer of the Year during next week's GCAC basketball banquet.
