Kansas City, Mo.—For the first time since 2002, the Dillard Bleu Devils enter the top 10 in the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics, landing at number seven in the nation. The Bleu Devils are currently the highest ranked Historically Black College & University (HBCU) in the entire NAIA.
"This is a step in the right direction on our road to winning a national championship," said Dillard University Director of Athletics Dr. Kiki Baker Barnes.
Last week, the Bleu Devils (19-6, 9-1 GCAC) were crowned 2017 Gulf Coast Athletic Conference Men's Basketball Regular Season Champions for the first time since 2001 with a 108-76 blowout victory at home over last year's regular season champs in Talladega College, and at the time Dillard still had three conference games remaining. As a team the Bleu Devils rank in the top 10 in the NAIA Division 1 in 11 different categories including:
Assists per game (2nd), total assists (3rd), scoring offense per game (4th), assist/turnover ratio (6th), total offensive rebounds (6th), total scoring offense (7th), total rebounds per game (7th), 3-point field goal percentage (8th), offensive rebounds per game (9th), field goal percentage (9th) and total rebound margin (10th).
The Bleu Devils are currently preparing for the annual Allstate Sugar Bowl Bleu Devil Classic where it will play host to its crosstown rival the Xavier University Gold Rush on Saturday, February 18 at 4:30 p.m. Earlier this season, the Bleu Devils crushed the Gold Rush 104-71 at the annual Crosstown Classic.
