All- Conference GCAC, Center, Sandra Nweke
New Orleans, LA -Sandra Nweke has ended her 3rd and final season with a total of 1085 points. New Orleans, LA -Sandra Nweke has ended her 3rd and final season with a total of 1085 points. Nweke scored her 1000th point in Dillard's last home game against the Belhaven College, Lady Blazers on February 28, 2008. The two-time All-Gulf Coast Athletic Conference (GCAC) standout has been the foundation of the Lady Blue Devils program. The 6-foot-senior majoring in biology and pre-med had her athletic career interrupted when the university was forced to cancel its 05-06 athletic season following the devastation of Hurricane Katrina.
Nweke returned with a vengeance. She scored a total of 811 points in the past two-seasons since the revival of the program in fall 2006. Nweke has led the Lady Blue Devils in scoring, rebounding, blocks, and double-doubles for two consecutive years. She averaged 15.4 points a game and 10.5 rebounds for the Lady Blue Devils. She posted 16 double-doubles this year. She was also named the GCAC player of the week ending February 10, 2008 after posting her 6th double-double in a row. In addition to leading her team, Nweke has remained ranked nationally in total rebounds and offensive rebounds for two straight years.
Interim Athletic Director/Head Lady Blue Devil coach Kiki Baker Barnes hopes that Nweke will be considered as a NAIA All-American candidate this year. "Sandra is one of the best post players in the country", said Barnes, " she has been double-teamed and triple-teamed for the past two years and she's managed to put up amazing numbers; other coaches have come up to me after a game and asked if they could have her on their team."
Nweke is not only a stellar athlete, but a scholar as well. The Houston native has been on the Dean's List since attending Dillard in fall 2004. She is a member of Beta Kappa Chi Scientific Honor Society and the National Institute of Science Honor Society. She serves as treasurer of the Minority Association for Pre-Health Students (MAPS) and a member of the International Student Association.
"Sandra will be missed tremendously", said Coach Barnes. "She is respected by her teammates and all those who know her. There is no one who will work harder than she will. She is an awesome ambassador for our athletics program and for our institution."
Nweke could return for a fourth season of competition, but has chosen to pursue her dreams of becoming a pediatrician. Sandra is a true Champion of Character.
